What are the reasons people get in trouble with the IRS?
Payroll Taxes
When there’s money in the bank, business owners often forget where it came from. They see a high balance and say, oh, good, there’s more than I thought; now I can get that new computer system. After the money is spent, payroll taxes come due. Oops.
Or perhaps in the early, mad-scramble years of being in business, when owners are struggling to pay vendors, employees, rent, and PG&E, the money gets spent on those essentials. When the tax bill comes in, the money’s not there. If you are in that position, you need someone to advocate on your behalf.
Failure to File
When people don’t have the money to pay their taxes, they may decide not to file a return, thinking the IRS won’t notice. Mistake. The IRS does notice. If you get a W-2 or a 1099, the IRS has a copy of it. When the computer doesn’t find a match between that document and a tax return, it sends out an alert. That’s when an unwelcome letter comes in the mail. You need someone to advocate on your behalf.
Failure to Pay
Some folks do file a return—so far so good—but find they can’t pay what they owe. They watch with horror as interest and penalties mount. They have no idea that some of the penalties can be abated. The IRS won’t tell you all your options. You need someone to advocate on your behalf.
